A good life is directly related to a good health. SpanishviaSkype introduced its new Medical Spanish Course to you last January. It’s been a year in which we have met young professionals who needed to increase their Spanish vocabulary in the field of Medicine for different reasons.
Our students have been working on medical reports, emails, video and audio materials and they have been suported by a team of tutors: Dr. Amalio Ordóñez (Medical Oncologist in Madrid) and Dra. Marta Herrero (Family Doctor in Madrid).
Today, we are going to deal with the names of some vital organs and illnesses related with them.
The heart, the engine of our body, it’s a muscle responsible for bombear (to pump) sangre (blood) through los vasos sanguíneos (blood vessels). Blood provides oxygen and nutrients. There are a number of diseases involving our heart: el infarto de miocardio (heart attack or myocardial infarction, MI), angina de pecho (heart failure due to not enough blood flow to heart) or arritmia (arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat).
The lungs extract oxygen and transfer it into the flujo sanguíneo (blood stream) with 2 basic movements: la inspiración (inhalation) and la espiración (exhalation). The commonest lung diseases are asma bronquial (caused by a reversible blockage of las vías respiratorias, respiratory tract), bronquitis (una inflamación of the bronquios), Neumonía (an inflammatory condition of the lungs which affects los alveolos, air sacs) and la insuficiencia respiratoria (respiratory failure).
The kidneys, two organs that have different functions (filtración, absorción, secreción and excreción) but basically, they filter and process the blood and produce la orina (urine). Among the diseases that affect the kidneys are el cálculo renal (kidney Stone disease), nefropatía diabética (caused by the diabetes mellitus) and insuficiencia renal (kidney failure), as a consequence of other diseases.
The liver secrets bile, which is essential for the digestion of fats, it also eliminates different harmful substances from blood, like alcohol, and it has many other functions. Cirrosis hepática is one of the fearest diseases (the liver can’t work properly due to long-term damage). Others are hepatitis and different syndromes.
