Holidays or vacations in Spanish speaker countriesThe answer for this question is very obvious: “not working but still getting paid”. That is what thousands and thousands of Spaniards will have during this month: vacaciones (holidays).

It’s not always easy to set up the holiday plans in a company. August is high season, when most of employees request their free days. Because of that, some negotiations must be done.

Today, we’ll learn some vocabulary about the types of days off in Spanish labor system.

There are different ways to ask for a leave in Spain. Some of them will allow you to still keep your salary while you are out, although in other cases, you will get a reduction or even a suspension.

Permisos para días de Asuntos propios

We can get our days off using our vacaciones. In Spain, all workers have the right to enjoy at least 30 calendar days per year.

Nevertheless, these are not the only days off we might get. We can request un permiso (a leave): 15 days of permiso de matrimonio (leave for employee’s marriage), 2 days of permiso de nacimiento de hijo (leave for a child’s birth), permiso de fallecimiento, accidente o enfermedad grave de un familiar (leave for a relative’s death, accident or serious illness), 1 day of permiso de mudanza (leave for a move) and some more.

Reducción de jornada

In addition to this, a worker has the option to reduce their working time (50% at most), of course, with a reduction in their salary. This option is only given to those who take care of children under 12, a disable person, or dependent people.

La excedencia 

Workers can request a leave of absence. Consequently, they can stop working for a period of time between 4 months and 5 years. Unfortunately, they will not receive their salary during this time, but they can study at the university, be a political representative or just travelling around the world, because no justification is required.

Las bajas

This is, perhaps, the worst idea to have some days off. La baja laboral or incapacidad temporal is the inability to work because of a health situation or an accident. There are three types: accidente de trabajo, enfermedad profesional, and enfermedad común. Even though you will be paid during your baja, we are sure you will prefer one of the other options.
