Carnaval 2014: Las chirigotas (C1)

chirigotaCarnival is coming and lots of Spanish cities and towns are dressing up. Last year, we talked about Spanish Carnival on this post. So, this year, we’re not going to talk about máscaras (masks) , maquillaje (make-up), pelucas (wigs)  or disfraces (costumes). We’re going to focus on Las chirigotas, one of the funniest shows you can ever watch.

As our students on www.spanishviaskype.com probably know, Spaniards’ sense of humour is very peculiar: we like to laugh not only at our neighbours, but also at ourselves. And this is what las chirigotas do.

They are very typical in Cádiz, one of the most popular cities that host Carnival. A chirigota is a musical group, formed between 7 and 12 musicians and singers. They sing and play satirical and burlesque songs, making fun of politicians, celebrities and other pop icons. They’re often dressed up, wearing wigs and make-up. Their songs are quite catchy and if you listen to one of these, you’ll probably laugh, although you don’t understand anything.

Here we leave one of the 2014 chirigota’s lyrics and we offer you a challenge: try to read and understand it. If you can’t, don’t worry, you can always reserve a free trial lesson with us to learn Spanish via Skype.

¡Feliz Carnaval 2014!

 Este gobierno ha inventado

una ambiciosa campaña

dirigida al ciudadano,

seguro que ya ha escuchado,

es sobre la marca España.

La marca España le ofrece

productos de calidad,

como su ricos chorizos,

que son muy ricos,

los más frescos del lugar.

También sepa que

la marca España tiene un detergente

que el dinero de

lo deja blanco, limpio y reluciente.

Hay una sección

de ultramarinos que está justo al fondo

y allí se venden

los peces gordos.

¡Este gobierno apuesta por la marca España!

¡No compres Hacendado, compra marca España!

La marca España no engaña.

Y si va a manifestarse

también puede degustar

las tortas y las galletas

que un antidisturbio le repartirá.

Y es que en la marca España

todo lo puede encontrar,

desde chorizos a peces gordos

y a detergentes pa blanquear,

sólo un producto seguramente no encontrará:

aquí no tenemos huevos,

aquí no tenemos huevos

y no pasa na.
