mensajecelularSince new technologies have reached into our lives, languages have had to adapt to these changes.

Firstly, SMS spread the world some decades ago. This cellular messaging system allowed us to communicate with somebody very quickly. This speed we need in our current lives, made us change and shorten words, in order not to waste our time. Then, computers messenger applications and chat rooms increased this new way of writing. Finally, we mixed both ways and now we can chat using our own cellular. Today we’ll take a look to those changes in Spanish:

We can difference some patterns in this evolution:

  • Shortening words or syllables which share the same sound of single letters:

–         De = d

–         Te = t

–         Me = m

–         Ese / Es = s

–         Él / El = l

S s l novio d mi amiga. T gusta? = Ese es el novio de mi amiga. ¿Te gusta?

(That is my friend’s boyfriend. Do you like him?)

A q ora mpieza l xmn? = ¿A qué hora empieza el examen?

(What time does the exam start?).

  • Dropping vowels:

–         ntncs = Entonces (then, so…)

–         Mñn = Mañana (tomorrow).

–         Spñl = Español (Spanish)

ntncs mñn tnmos kls d spñl? =  Entonces, ¿mañana tenemos clase de español?

(So, do we have a Spanish class tomorrow?).

  • Using symbols or numbers which share the same sound of words or syllables:

–         + = Más (more, plus…)

–         – = Menos (less).

–         :  = Entre (Between)

–         x = por (for, by…).

–         xa = para (for)

–         xq = porque (because)

–         Salu2 = Saludos (greetings).

–         A2 = Adiós (bye).

No tngo + dinero. M voy a ksa. sta mñn. A2. =  No tengo más dinero. Me voy a casa. Hasta mañana. Adiós.

(I don’t have more money. I’m going home. See you tomorrow. Bye).

We just tried to collect some of the most used shortenings. But every single user invents new ways every day.

From we encourage you to learn proper Spanish via Skype, although this phenomenon is a reality and our students should know it.
